Serement – Deviation From God [EP]

serement – deviation from god [ep]

Info

‘Deviation From God’ is the first effort by this new Greek Death Metal band and was self-released digitally at the end of last year, but now gets a physical release, on cassette tape, through the freshly founded Theogonia Records label from Poland. Reason enough for a quick dive into this short EP.

Because, short it is, even clocking under the 8 minute mark. But, I have always said I generally prefer EP’s above long-players for the more extreme genres. And the format is also most suitable for bands that tends to be rather standard or one-dimensional in nature, without taking that as a disqualification. Serement is a bit of the above, they are a Death Metal band that, although there is enough variety in their music, doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Nothing that they present hasn’t been heard before, but moreover, they do sound quite predictable. Even if they incorporate enough melody and tempo changes to stay from the all too standard and staccato territories. It is just the song writing that isn’t much of a great level, which is rather surprising, since the musicianship itself sounds pretty tight and overall well-rounded. If I should draw a comparison, I think the last two Vital Remains albums comes closest. But it is needless to say that the level of ingenuity and stunning creativity is not reached within the borders of these 8 minutes. But despite the criticism, this is still an enjoyable EP that offers quite enough starting points for future work. I’ll be keeping an eye out for Serement.
