Schattenfall – Das Verderben [EP]

schattenfall – das verderben [ep]

Info

From the North-Rhine Westphalia region of Germany, Schattenfall are a trio who combine traditional Black Metal wrapped in a sombre melancholic atmospheric veil, and this 2020 EP entitled ‘Das Verderben’ was at the time their most powerful work to date. Featuring three tracks, opener ‘Totentanz’ has a very distinctive bass tone intro before hitting into slow, doom laden guitar leads which sweep and twist and wind out a bleak, depressive picture. Ragnar’s vocals are emotionally absorbing, with a traditionally raw aspect to them, whilst the spartan use of synth reminds me both of early Burzum and Hungarian band Forest Silence. The uncompromising drumming technique of Evgen Karamushko (White Ward) really embellishes the colossal sound whilst the bass play is a constant, dominant force. ‘Totentanz’ feels metronomic, in that it has a satisfyingly reliable beat to it. This quality carries over seamlessly into ‘Abschied’ which whilst much shorter is no less potent of dramatic atmosphere. In fact Ragnar ratchets up the strained, anguished lean of his vocal work to add a real air of desperation to this track. Closing with ‘Der Schiffbrüchige’, a slightly more raw tint is added but the blueprint remains pleasingly unchanged. I found listening to Schattenfall’s earlier work that they oscillated between bleak sombre moods and more Punk laden simpler rhythms. ‘Das Verderben’ has a far more complex sound and an aura of gloom that is both impenetrable and unwavering.
