Rot – As Darkness Burns

rot – as darkness burns

Info

I won’t sugarcoat this one, I don’t like this album. But despite my personal preferences not being met here, I won’t simply dismiss it as “bad”, but it isn’t. Allow me to elaborate a little more.

Vietnam isn’t a country known for its thriving Black Metal scene, but what we have here in Rot’s ‘As Darkness Burns’ is competent and clean sounding Metal through and through. Quite reminiscent of what was being done in the first decade of the 2000’s, especially because I can notice some clear Thrash and Death Metal influences throughout the album.

I can’t really name any bands that sound similar to his, mainly because (to me, that is) it sounds quite generic, and maybe that’s why I can’t put my finger on what bands really influenced Rot.

This is not the kind of Black Metal that I like, but let me make this clear, this is also not a bad album or the work of a band that doesn’t know what they’re doing. It’s just that the sound seems very approachable and surface level to my ears. So it’s like listening to some kind of “entry level” band that would appeal more to a teenage me instead of my old and grumpy self of today.

By any means, if you like Black Metal with tinges of Thrash and Death here and there, go ahead, you’ll probably enjoy ‘As Darkness Burns’ much more than I did. The riffs are delivered well, the vocals are also very competent and the production is clean and allows all the instruments their due space.

Check it out if this sounds like something you’d enjoy.
