Ribspreader – The Monolith [EP]

ribspreader – the monolith [ep]

Info

After a rather quick start this Swedish death metal act got a bit of a stranger in the scene. The band called its quits pretty much right after releasing their second album, on the Dutch Karmageddon Media label. A label that is getting more and more some sort of a questionable reputation for their policies and relationships with their bands. However, after splitting up in 2005 they got back together about a year later to release two 7” vinyls, a split with Machetazo on the Italian The Spew Records and this full 7” EP on Blood Harvest. And as always with this label, it’s a great one again…

For those who were unaware of this Swedish death metal horde, they are pretty much in the same vein as all the Swedish death metal veterans like Grave, Dismember and above all Entombed. It’s a bit of that “Clandestine”-kind of sound, though a lot dirtier and more fuzzy, with a major Asphyx vibe to it to add to the murky sound and atmosphere. Completed with that Martin van Drunen kind of shrieky tone at some of the last ends of Ribspreader’s vocalist growls. All three songs on this 7” EP have that dirty swing that makes the Swedish death metal underground sound (not to be mistaken with the more smooth sounding Gothenburg sound played by bands like At The Gates) so much enjoyable. The raw recording and the dirty sound certainly adds to this feeling of old as well – and where else should this belong then on vinyl? Jup, a pretty damn good EP this is!
