The aptly titled ‘Transcending The Suffocative Light’-demo is the first offering from this one-man act from Kremenchuk, Ukraine. On this (so far) digital only demo Yehor “Gnom” Mutylin serves us with quite a suffocating sort of Death/Doom Metal that offers way more than only the same old, milked fake Asphyx or Autopsy ridden kind.
Indeed, it is not merely a Doom/Death Metal exercise, the bleak production and quite minimal approach also bears a distinct Black Metal sort of ambience. This blends down in quite a unique sort of extreme metal that really balances on the edge of both Death Metal, Black Metal and extreme sorts of Doom Metal. It really has nothing to do with early Paradise Lost, let alone with the more romantic kind of Death/Doom. An almost sludgy approach to the drums sets the pace of the funereal, dragging tempo on which the Black/Death Metal riffs are layered upon. The very deep and guttural vocals, which seem to have some sort of distorted effect on them, offer the icing on this very foul and bleak cake. This 25-minute demo honours its title as well as the band name and the creepy cover. Not an easy listen per se, but definitely worth checking out if you are into the dirtiest sewer-like Doom/Death territories.
