Mephitic Corpse – Sickness Attracts Sickness

mephitic corpse – sickness attracts sickness

Info

This album right here is going kill you! Everything is calculated for maximum brutality and the way it kicks off sets the stage – the crunch fuzzed out noize of the bass, the Imprecation-like chunky guitar tone, the clickiness of the kick. The drums are like an anvil getting thrown down some flimsy stairs. This album has an area of effect bonus that casts fire to all posers within listening distance instantly. Vocals are so low and indistinguishable with occasional gurgles that fit well to the music. The vocals here make me think of early Cannibal Corpse with Chris Barnes but even lower and more brutal mixed with the nastier parts of the vocalist from Infester. If Immortal Fate, (early)Cannibal Corpse, Infester. Gore Infection, Dahmer and Imprecation were blended together it would probably be an approximation of these ingredients on display. Props to this band, keeping this shit alive in 2025 baby – brutal and 90’s influenced all the way.

The drummer pummels the listener and is a blast machine but never sounds like fake bullshit, the dude is definitely playing his ass off in the seat on an acoustic drum kit, no silly Fischer Price play time happy hour, no programmed shitfest just a guy playing fast with a general showcast of blast flexing that feels organic, sounds effortless. It’s dope as fuck that the snare drum is loud and hits so nicely along with the aforementioned clicky kick sound.

‘Sickness Attracts Sickess’ is full of disgusting song titles to match the music like ‘Teething on Clots’, ‘Grisly Vomit on Self’ or my favourite; ‘Gutpuked Maggot Treatment’. They follow the Dead Infection school of amusing and gory song names that fit the music but don’t go into overly pretentious Death Metal big brain “I-got-the-dictionary-out” song titles (which happens in Goregrind alot too for medical terms, but I guess that makes sense). If you want 30 minutes of crushing fall down the stairs music from hell influenced by classic American Death Metal GOATs get over here and check this shit out what are you even waiting for dude.

There’s some guitar squeal action here, some immensely violent and corrosive breakdowns that bleed into a blur of chaotic downtuned mayhem. This is Brutal Death Metal made by people who listen to a fuckload of Brutal Death Metal and Grind and it’s going to rock you if you’re not deep into this kinda thing already, which it should (and if you’re reading this, you probably are). It actually reminds me of Pissgrave a bit (not so much sonically in the type of Death Metal they have a different sound) on the notion that this is not “dipping your toes into the genre” Death Metal – this is fucked up music for freaks and thats the highest praise I can give it!

It’s like hearing ‘Tomb of the Mutilated’ as a kid for the first time for myself and being like “Woah dude” but the modern equivalent of that. The band’s sound obviously worked well translated into a longer form and builds off the sound established on the excellent ‘Immense Thickening Vomit’ demo from 2019. A nice addition to hear was a voice mail from one of the members from Immortal Fate used for an intro, love that. It is probable that strict “Thrash and New Wave Of British Heavy Metal only” type metal fans would probably have a heart attack if two seconds of this album got put on, again that’s not a bad thing. All I can say further is, keep em comin’ boys!
