Of course, with a cover like this, it is not too difficult to imagine what awaits you on this new 7’ EP from Germany’s Carnal Tomb. So let’s not beat about the bush, this is Carnal Tomb’s homage to Swedish Death Metal and to Dismember and Grave specifically.
Dismember may be obvious with the reference in the logo and title, but on the B-side we also find the Grave classic ‘Extremely Rotten Flesh’. The connoisseur may hear something of an extra flair in the melody of ‘Dismembered’, which we find on the A-side, but other than that, both songs are really just performed true to nature and in deference to the originals. This is a nice gesture, of course, but not really that interesting for the listener. Of course, the average Death Metal fanatic knows both songs like the back of his hand. The added value of including such recordings always escapes me a bit, and apart from Carnal Tomb delivering a funny smidgen in anticipation of the new album, I think this musical tribute was mostly fun for the band itself.
