Info

Genre characterization is something that is brutally broken down and often hotly debated band by band and style by style between metalheads of all kinds. And getting it just “right'” is something that doesn’t always seem to hit or sit right. You have bands out there that call themselves Melodic Death Metal when in all reality they are run of the mill Metalcore. You also can have bands that consider themselves some sort of the multitude of styles of Black Metal when in all actuality they are something completely different but happen to just have Black Metal touches added within.

Now, none of the genre labeling problems have anything to do with the quality of products, just makes what you call it harder. And that leads us to the band and album in question here, Nidare’s ‘Von Wegen’. Nidare are classified almost everywhere as Post-Black Metal, yet I do not feel like that is correct. I may be in a minority here but I think this band should be considered Post-Rock/Metal with heavy influences from Black Metal. Much like another great Post Rock/Metal band Year Of No Light but Nidare have a little bit more of a Black Metal touch.

If you notice above I did happen to say great. For whatever genre, tag or label you would like to call the music held ‘Von Wegen’, it is just great. But what does it sound like? Well, it sounds like some of the best parts of Explosions In The Sky interlaced with some majestic Isis interweaved with the harshness and blackness of Wolves In The Throne Room. And if that even somewhat sounds good to you then this album is exactly for you. It’s extremely well written, performed, sequenced and produced, a total package of an album.

My own quibbles with genre garbage aside, ‘Von Wegen’ is a rather outstanding, mature debut full-length album from this German band. It has that perfect blend of being able to hear the influences while still sounding like their own blend of the brew. All in all, ‘Von Wegen’ is great and a damn good place to start.
