Mulciber – Misery of One [EP]

mulciber – misery of one [ep]

Info

From the depths of the Cleveland Death Metal scene comes a new quartet intent on darkness and dominance, who go by the name of Mulciber. The artwork for their debut ‘Misery of One’ EP (CD Release by Redefining Darkness Records) promises something truly epic, with a hint of solitude, and has been wonderfully rendered by Inhuman Flesh Media. There is a sense that Mulciber had time to create this first offering as they did so during the pandemic, and the five tracks/fifteen minute long EP really benefits from the time taken. Mulciber’s style is predominantly hard hitting, and opening track ‘Caught in Fire’ has more than the occasional nod to some of the USA’s finest Death Metal talent of old. An odd little quirk of the opening track is that it seems to stop half way through, and then re-start as a new song. Not sure what that is about but both parts to the track are equally as brutal, and both are forged through the fires of pummelling riffs and equally punishing drumming. In truth, Mulciber’s style is pretty orthodox, but they pepper this EP with some intensive moments of full on grinding brutality, and their basic style is amplified to greater heights through their unwavering savagery. Props must go to the vocals which are gut wrenching throughout and add a layer of sickness and putridity that this EP definitely needs. For the most part though this offering is a celebration of riffs; from deep chugging slabs of heaviness to sharp forks of piercing guitar screech. ‘Misery of One’ certainly matches up their abrasive musical aspect with their bleak artwork, and the EP promises good things in the future from Mulciber.
