Midnight – Let There Be Witchery

midnight – let there be witchery

Info

Much has changed since the inception of Midnight. Going from a side-project that was initially only releasing (split) EP’s through various underground labels, Midnight went to a band that signed to Metal Blade reaching a thousandfold audience and releases their fifth studio album in 2022. Though that quest for world domination is the only thing that has really changed, the musical direction is still very much the same.

On ‘Let There Be Witchery’ Midnight’s sole member, Athenar, still sleazes himself through short and dirty rocking speed metal songs. Going from contagious up tempo rockers like ‘Nocturnal Molestation’ to the slow buzzing sleazy Motörhead-like riffs in ‘More Torment’, all songs follow the same pattern of catchy riffs and sing-along choruses. On this new record the blend of sleazy rock ‘n’ roll and speed metal is being perfected even further with a sound that’s more slick and easy to swallow. It will still appeal to everyone who’s into bands like Motörhead, Venom, Darkthrone (‘Circle The Wagons’ for instance) or later Abigail. Only thing is, that despite all full-length albums clock in around half an hour each, I still think the band would indeed be at its best and most effective if it would be releasing EP’s (or maybe even shorter albums) as all the songs follow the same downtrodden paths that tend to make you lose attention.

So… No surprises here. Fans of the previous albums will dig it as much, haters still gonna hate, but I am sure that ‘Let There Be Witchery’ will not end the ever-growing popularity of the band.
