Krater – Das Relikt Des Triumphes

krater – das relikt des triumphes

Info

I remember getting mailed by Abortio from Krater a few years ago, trying to sell one of his first releases. I do not recall whether it was a demo or an EP or something else. But now I have their debut in my hands, a nice looking digipack with a dark brownish cover and an occult drawing.

Musically this German black metal out fit fits perfectly in the German black metal tradition, this could have easily been from the mid 90’s German black metal wave. Yet, as with most of the Christhunt Production releases, the quality is a bit higher than those notoriously bad Last Episode label. The rather bombastic, yet raw, black metal from Krater has got a solid basis of raw riffing, pummelling bass and drums but also benefits from a melodic touch, some fine melodic guitar leads reminds of Bathory and perhaps Nachtfalke (another Christhunt Productions recording band). Bathory springs to mind because of the tendency of the guitar leads to go out of key here and there, but also the slight pagan feel that haunts the music gives it a more diverse sound, not completely different from mid-era Bathory. Yet, the black metal fury of the songs are more than half of Krater’s trademark. Though fully dressed up in the classic black metal way, including war paint, torches, bulletbelts and all kinds of weaponry Krater really manages to get a more ‘colourful’ sound, in matters of diversity. But they really need to focus on getting all these things in a more mature and coherent way, they surely have the right potential to become one of Germany’s best bands in the slightly paganish black metal genre. I’ll keep my eyes open for the follow-up of this nicely titled “Das Relikt Des Triumphes”.
