Jumalhämärä – Slaughter The Messenger [EP]

jumalhämärä – slaughter the messenger [ep]

Info

This band with its unpronounceable name (for non-Finnish people though) from Finland has been moving through the underground pretty much unnoticed. Which is actually pretty weird, considering the quality of the offered material on this EP – clocking in at nearly twenty minutes. These days of popularity of the more dark and open-minded black metal should make a healthy environment for a band like this.

“Slaughter The Messenger” is definitely a must-listen for fans of black metal bands like Deathspell Omega, Bergraven, (later) Shining, last Mayhem, Wolves In The Throne Room blended with the nicely arranged post-rock tunes of the likes of If These Trees Could Talk, Windmills By The Ocean and, better known, The Red Sparowes. This, obviously, resulting in a rather unusual listen, but adventurous it is. Dissonant soundscapes, clear piano/guitars, passages that are more close to free jazz than John Coltrane… A colourful collage of progressive depressiveness. Definitely a must for people who love to look further than their average Dark Funeral, Marduk or Belphegor albums. You shouldn’t be afraid of hidden melodies that are hard to decipher and you definitely should play this a few times as it might take a while before this rather monstrous EP will show its entire beauty. If it wasn’t clear already, this is no easy listening music for your average Sunday morning, if you’re into that, please stick to the last Dark Funeral or Watain albums please.
