Funeral Whore – Phantasm

Info

From the town of Beverwijk in North Holland comes Funeral Whore. Recently signed to Germany’s extreme label FDA Rekotz, the band released their second full length in March of 2016 after a series of line-up changes and a four year hiatus. Heavily influenced by Grave and clearly navigating on the ocean of old-school death metal, the band recorded a total of 11 songs for this new album, a total of a little more than 40 minutes. There are some memorable moments throughout the record, with some very strong and catchy guitar riffs (Funeral Whore’s best characteristic, by far) and the majority of the songs are good, but there are also some not so good occasions (the guitar leads could be better and the songs deserved something more on this department. There are also some points where the band seem to fall out of synch). The production is a little sloppy (do we really need to listen to all that ground noise of the guitar amp? Was it on purpose?). The drums should sound a lot better than this and the vocals shouldn’t be so far behind in the mix. Something they need to improve on future recordings. Expect a good death metal record but nothing extraordinary. (Antonio)
