Funeral Moth – Funeral Moth [EP]

funeral moth – funeral moth [ep]

Info

Already released as a two-track demo-tape, this Japanese ultra-slow funeral doom act got its first official release with this two-tracks mini CD. Though Japan is not quite (yet) the country of doom, they certainly have spawned some great acts like Church Of Misery, dot(.) and Coffins. But, this Funeral Moth is definitely different from any of these.

Influces were clearly drawn from acts like Worship, Mournful Congregation and Thergothon they are far from original. But with their nearly fully instrumental tracks, with an occasional deep throaty grunt and an almost funny shrieky yell, they still know how to give it their own twist. It’s the second track on this mini-CD (still clocking in at nearly half an hour) that is the most interesting, with more classic doom/death influences, let’s say Paradise Losts’s “Gothic”-era. Also the more classic steelstring-like passage halfway the track is definitely interesting, almost as hynotizing as Earth tends to be on albums like “Hex”.

Definitely a worthy addition to the small scene that funeral doom is. A full-length album or split release with some of the gods in the scene is only a matter of time, as these three Japanese guys sure know how to impress with monolithic and extremely slow doooom. It is therefore the more disappointing that the packing of this great EP is this cheap, Weird Truth Productions had to know better with their outstanding bandroster!
