Frailty – Lost Lifeless Lights

frailty – lost lifeless lights

Info

Doom metal was always celebrated as a kind of ‘elitist’ genre, as it has always been a very small and rather narrow-minded genre. Over the years many bands have been incorporating doomy elements in their music which later has been labeled as ‘doom metal’. If it really should’ve been seen as doom metal remains to be seen. This, together with the growing interest in the genre over the last few years, many bands have stood up and made the scene a lot bigger than, say, ten year ago. But with any growing scene this not only means quality bands rear their heads…

This Frailty from Latvia is such a band that would not be missed if they have been kept in demoing. Their weakest spot on the whole idea of Frailty are the vocals. It is rather clear that they are aiming too high for their own good. When they keep on the grunting-path it all sounds pretty acceptable, but the cleaner/’chanting’ parts sound too forced and most of the time plain out of tune. Though there are more grunts than any other vocal style it still ruins much of the listening pleasure of an album that, in itself, isn’t that bad. It is rather obvious to say that a band like Mourning Beloveth must have been one of their major influences, especially around their “Dust” and “Sullen Sulcus”-era. The faster parts on the album, as heard on a song like “Graphics In Ebony”, also fail to have the impact that they clearly had in mind. Unfortunately they miss the point on almost every aspect on the album.

Basically this is a very mediocre album that has a hard time keeping the listener interested in the better parts of the album (the Mourning Beloveth-parts, so to speak) and it keeps on giving the weaker points all the attention. This Latvian band was surely not ready for the studio yet, they’d better put some more time in crafting their music a little more. Though a compliment must be given to the production, which sounds pretty meaty and heavy enough to compete with most of the genre’s heavyweights.
