Felvum – Fullmoon Mysticism [EP]

felvum – fullmoon mysticism [ep]

Info

Founded at the very beginning of 2022, the Ukranian Black Metal band Felvum was already able to spawn its first EP, ‘Fullmoon Mysticism’, in early April. The current status of the band is a little unclear as guitarist The Crying Orc (best known for his own Black Metal band Këkht Aräkh) moved to Berlin, Germany and bassist and drummer Wanja Mamykin is supposedly currently defending his native country of Ukraine against the Russian invasion. But for now, at least, they have managed to present a very strong and convincing debut EP.

Though you might link this EP to Immortal’s amazing debut, ‘Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism’, but although this sounds rather Nordic, it is not quite Immortal that Felvum has taken their main inspiration from. Felvum’s take on Black Metal is quite a simple one, a straight forward approach that sounds not too much unlike Darkthrone at their classic ‘Transylvanian Hunger’-album. Maybe not so much in guitar tone, but it has a bit of that same dragging feel to some of its riffs and the one-dimensionalism has its similarities to that of the Norwegian Black Metal stalwarts. Especially the opening track ‘Forest Unknown’ has a strong Darkthrone feel. It does have a stronger sense of melodicism though, making a comparison to Taake on their, equally fantastic debut album, ‘Nattestid Ser Porten Vid’ also very much in place. The overall sound of this EP, which clocks just under the 15 minute mark, is really authentic as well, making this a very exciting listen. No, not at all original, but on this particular example I’d like to quote our VM-Underground chief-editor: when it is done right, it is done right. And that is exactly what ‘Fullmoon Mysticism’ is, a near-perfect example of excellent Nordic Black Metal.
