Exhumation [GRE] – Seas of Eternal Silence [Re-Release]

exhumation [gre] – seas of eternal silence [re-release]

Info

Exhumation from Greece released their pioneering album “Seas of eternal silence” in 1997, a period of time which was an experimental and reinventing one for Death Metal. Bands like Paradise Lost, Katatonia and Anathema gave Death Metal a doomy and gothic touch while In Flames, Dark Tranquility and At The Gates put the melodies in the traditional Swedish Death Metal.

With “Seas of eternal silence” Exhumation filled in the gap exactly between those two movements. This lead to an interesting mixture that should be known by every (Death-)metalhead. Due to the re-release even the younger generations are able to listen to this piece of metal history. For folks like me who witnessed the 90´s Death Metal era there is no excuse for not knowing it.

A fact which makes this album even greater is that it was produced by no one else than the musician/producer extraordinaire Dan Swanö. He himself was pushing the limits in Death Metal with his bands Edge Of Sanity and even more with Nightingale which was a more avant-garde goth rock project of him. His experimental experience surely influenced the sound of the tracks, especially in the brilliant use of the keyboards which adds this dark doomy gothic feeling to them. This gives the songs the advantage that even at their heaviest they retain a certain sense of melody.

After the split up in 2000 Marios Iliopoulos found the band Nightrage, a melodic Death Metal band which is still very popular today.

A lot of bands adopted the Gothenburg sound and called it their own even years after its creation, but there are far fewer who were involved in the process. Through “Seas of eternal silence” Exhumation will always live on. (HaCeBo)
