Ereb Altor – Blot-Ilt-Taut

Info

QUORTHON. BATHORY. Yes. Both names in capitals. Why, you ask? Oh boy/girl/emo/mentally ill person/one of those internet warriors who are on a social justice run lately…choose whatever you like….like many of you I’m a huge Bathory fan. Quorthon made so many great songs, be it raw or über epic. Be it “Sacrifice” or “One Rode to Asa Bay”…classicks, all of them! I already knew the Vikings of Ereb Altor had the same passion as I saw a good live cover of “Twilight of the Gods” in one of the Baltic States. Lithuania to be precise. They decided to record a whole album as a homage, and chosen 7 songs to honour Quorthon. First of all, good job on the songs that are chosen. Nobody can disagree with tracks like “A Fine Day to Day”, “Woman of Dark Desires”, “The Return of Darkness and Evil” and “Home once Brave” (with the 100% “From Whom the Bell Tolls” ending). And don’t you dare to even try. And ofcourse, it’s always debatable if “Enter The Eternal Fire” (my personal favorite), “Call from the Grave” or any other great Bathory song should be included, but it would be an ever-going-on discussion. Almost all tracks are a pure tributes, only “Woman of Dark Desires” has a twist of its own. But they are all good tributes, still the clean vocals of Mats are too smooth comparing it with Quorthon. Let’s just call his vocals “too good”, as Quorthon sings out of tone. But maybe it has something to do with my expectation, maybe I want to keep Bathory…as Bathory as it must be. Bathory fan? And you want to hear better covers that Mystic Circle’s version of “One Rode to Asa Bay”? These guys deliver the goods… (Ricardo)
