Distrüster – Sic Semper Tyrannis

distrüster – sic semper tyrannis

Info

‘Sic Semper Tyrannis’ is the debut album for Polish Distrüster, a band that was founded in 2021 by James Stewart (Decapitated and ex-Vader among many others) and two others to mix up Death Metal, Thrash Metal and Crustcore. The album, which was recorded, mixed and mastered by M of Mgła, saw its release in the last months of 2022 through Ossuary Records.

And, why not, let’s start with a conclusion. The idea of mixing up these three styles of extreme music is not new and it has been proven that it can be successful, but ‘Sic Semper Tyrannis’ is not quite part of that proof. Despite the extensive experience of the three musicians and especially Stewart’s impressive CV (which also prefigures live work with Belphegor, Kampfar and Skeletonwitch), it all comes across as “not quite”. The music indeed has a distinct vibe of Crustcore in the style of Disfear, but lacks the razor-sharp aggression and catchiness. Just adding some D-beat drums is simply not enough to give it wings. It lacks the good vocals and especially the melodies. The same can actually be said about the Death Metal and Thrash Metal section, the Crustcore riffs and rhythms get in the way of giving it the full heaviness and power of those genres. It is also worth noting also that M’s hand can be heard in the somewhat contrary riffs that pop up here and there, making the whole thing even more incoherent. No, this cannot exactly be called a success and in fact, without wishing to appear rude, the best aspect of the album is beautiful Adam Burke artwork. Should you still be interested, the album is available on both cassette tape and CD.
