Desolator – Unearthly Monument

Info

Hellthrasher Productions surprised me with some decent releases in 2012 / early 2013, which made me curious about their future releases. After Malfeitor, Resurgency and Decaying, it’s time for Desolator to give me satisfaction in the “Putrid-O-Rama” department. It is possible they fulfill my never-ending urge on Old School Swedish Death Metal, according to the critics who heard their “Gravefeast” demo and the split with Resurgency. It seems the demo tracks are present on “Unearthly Monument” as well, so one could think this will be Buzzsaw-Skogsberg-Sound-Valhalla! Even the advertisement in our first issue mentions the unholy trinity of Dismember, Entombed and Grave as frame of reference. If you have read some of my reviews in our first issue, you will probably know this is right up my alley. Well, I was very disappointed after the first spin as it has nothing to do with the famous elements of Old School Swedish Death Metal. No Dismember riffs, no Grave grooves, no Skogsberg sound…no nothing! “Unearthly Monument” is a straightforward Death Metal album which has a lot of resemblances with Vader (end 1990s / early 2000s) concerning the riffs and drum sound. Also the American scene is present with hints towards the Florida area (Malevolent Creation to continue the namedropping-fest), but for me the Vader thing hits you right in the face. So to sum everything up: Disappointed by the misleading info: Yes. Bad album: Nope. (Ricardo)
