Depraver / Vrenth – Depraver / Vrenth [Split]

depraver / vrenth – depraver / vrenth [split]

Info

This split release between two Californian Death Metal acts, Depraver and Vrenth, was originally released in 2021 on both cassette tape (Nero One Records) and CD (Cavernous Records) and now gets a well-deserved vinyl reissue done by Dutch Seed Of Doom Records.

On the A-side of the vinyl we do find Depraver, offering two tracks of speedy and Punk-driven Death Metal. Pretty much in the vein of a great jam session of Autopsy and Possessed in their prime and a tasteful Swedish Crust/Punk vibe poured over it. The very well-played tracks are topped off with a splendid production, crisp and heavy at the very same time. This allows the tracks to have maximum impact. The screaming whammy-bar guitars are doing the rest and take care of the band’s contribution to this split being craftfully balanced.

On the flip side, Vrenth is taking over with a bit more muffled sound that tends to tilt a little to the ‘cavernous’ side of the Death Metal spectrum. Yet, their touch of Black Metal darkness as well as the same sort of whammy attacks that Depraver also used, make the music a little more versatile than your average ‘caverncore’ band. While the guitars are in the centre of the attention with a way more interesting offering than what you might expect, the vocals are fairly standard and do not contribute a lot to the overall experience of Vrenth. Most remarkable of the three Vrenth tracks definitely is their Enthroned cover, ‘Ha Shaitan’, originally released on the Belgian’s ‘Towards The Skullthrone Of Satan’ LP from 1997. Their more Death Metal oriented take on the track is really interesting and is quite refreshing compared to the standard Entombed or Autopsy covers of late.
