Degraved – Whispered Morbidity [EP]

degraved – whispered morbidity [ep]

Info

Degraved’s demo from last year, ‘Exhumed Remnants’ was reviewed on these VM-Underground pages and was concluded to be a “not a bad little demo” to which my colleague added that it didn’t last long in his memory. But regardless of anyone’s opinion, the band continued and returned really quick with this new EP, released through Gurgling Gore on both cassette tape and CD.

Since there’s only a few weeks between the release of their first demo and this ‘Whispered Morbidity’-EP, there is not much of a significant difference between both recordings. The band offers a rather primitive, simplified and predominantly slow Death Metal attack which, in this case, lasts for almost 18 minutes and is divided into four tracks. And that is, frankly, just about enough. The music’s one-dimensionalism is not a problem when the playing time is kept short, so it doesn’t lose its lethality and to prevent to become a bit too stagnant. The slowness is where its danger lies, the sporadic faster parts giving just too little momentum to keep it all very exciting. The same can also be said about the somewhat monotonous, low grunts. If the band is thinking of a full-length album, it will do well to think about how to bring some more dynamics to the music, without letting the band’s identity suffer. Although one cannot speak of a distinct identity, because, fair is fair, this is effectively a-dime-a-dozen Death Metal. Reasonably well executed, yes, but, indeed, unedifying.
