Cauterizer – Then the Snow Fell… [EP]

Info

This Swedish Death Metal band may be long forgotten, yet Blood Harvest didn’t. And lucky us, really, as this is some of the better Swedish Death Metal that came to my ears. I honestly have to admit this is the first time I actually heard something from them. But because this band had members from Grave and Coercion I stumbled upon the name of this band several times in the past.

Anyway, the music is a little different from their peers that did just so well in the Swedish Death Metal scene. With a darker sound and lesser up tempo parts, they are a bit in the vein of the very early Therion recordings, old Paradise Lost and the Dutch once-Death-Metal band The Gathering. Of course there are enough of those typical Swedish parts, yet they certainly have a lot more to offer. Especially vocalist Gunnar Berglind adds to the band, with his rough vocals (reminding of Nick Holmes’ (Paradise Lost) early outings) and even whispers he gets the right atmosphere in those tracks. Also the interesting leads and solos are definitely worth mentioning. In fact, this is just great timeless Death Metal with the right atmosphere in it. This is how I like my Death Metal best, galloping riffs, good atmospheres, gruffy vocals and a bit of a doomy hint to it.

These four songs were originally released as a demo tape back in 1992 and were re-released only once on a cassette tape EP by Wild Rags a year later. Blood Harvest has done justice to these songs by putting them on shiny black wax – this is a very recommended buy, rather mandatory for those into old school Death Metal that has the right feeling in there.
