Azaghal – Mustamaa

azaghal – mustamaa

Info

This is not the new cd of Azaghal, it’s a re-issue of their debut LP. That LP was first released on Melancholy Productions, but that one was limited to 300 copies. They released their second album “Helvetin Yhdeksan Piiria” (first cd) on the Brazilian label Evil Horde Rec.. This album received many positive reviews and Azaghal became a prominent name in the underground.

‘Mustamaa’ (Mordor in English) can be subdivided in two parts. The first four tracks (the original A-Side of the LP) were recorded at Cursed Studio and the last four tracks are recorded at Hellkult Studio. A strange thing is that the album has nothing to do with Tolkien’s “Middle Earth”, but it’s named Mordor. Compared to “Helvetin…” Azaghal sounds more primitive and raw.

Their Black Metal is based upon mid-tempo melodies and a sinister atmosphere. Bands which remind me to this first part are Satyricon (old), Horna and the guitar sound of Kampfar’s debut. The B-Side is not that interesting, it’s even rawer and sounds like ordinary Black Metal at a demo-quality. It’s funny to hear some parts which are also used on the debut album of Hin Onde, the project of the members. Only the first four songs makes it worth to buy this album. And the other four songs are also interesting, but it probaly sounds to primitive for most listeners.

Hope to hear their third album soon with their Black Metal Terror, as they describe themselves. Useful re-issue.
