Autophagy – Bacteriophage

autophagy – bacteriophage

Info

In 2018 the American Death Metal band Autophagy delivered a nice demo that our chief editor Ricardo here at VM-Underground described as a good blend of Grave, Entombed, Benediction and Bolt Thrower. That means expectations were high… Yet, it took the band quite a bit of time to return to the front with new material, whether it was COVID-19 or anything else remains unclear, but finally at the fall of 2022 the band presented their debut full-length album: ‘Bacteriophage’, released through Pulverized Records on both vinyl and CD, while Necrolatry Records took care of its cassette tape version.

To start off with the references Ricardo made to those Swedish and British Death Metal giants, they still apply for a large extent. On this new album there might be less Grave and Entombed and maybe not so much Bolt Thrower too, instead they have added quite a bit of that same, popular, Incantation sort of vibe to the music. But whatever you’d like to hear in Autophagy’s music, it is executed very well. Some good grooves, choppy riffs and a forceful drive that is felt throughout the whole 34 minutes of the albums’ playing time. When the band throttles down a little, there is this heavy and rather blubberey sort of feel to the music, which offer a some well-needed diversity to the music.

Autophagy luckily stays away from the cavernous hype, but instead leans on solid riffs and decent drums. No wall of sound and harsh dissonance and lower-than-life vocals. In fact, it is not at all genre-defining or pushing whatever envelopes, but it is just a excellent ride of quality Death Metal. And, frankly, I am just happy with that.
