Autonoesis – Moon of Foul Magics

Info

What to say about ‘Moon of Foul Magics’, the sophomoric full length album from Canadian band Autonoesis. You’ll want to know if its a bad album I presume, and I can confidently tell you that it isn’t. Other than that I’m really struggling. You’d think listening to a band who play a melodic mash up of Thrash, Black and Death Metal would be filled to the brim with talking points, and yet here I am bereft of what to say.

Maybe that is part of the problem.; maybe there is just too much going on here for me to fully invest myself in this album? Sure, we have genre crossovers all the time from various bands, but putting all three major genres together in one bands sound can be messy; it speaks of a band who can’t make up their mind.

‘Moon of Foul Magics’ has all sorts going on. Visceral vocals that sit too far down in the mix to give them an authentic darker sound. There are intricate guitar solos, fast paced riffs, and a drumming style that adepts well to whatever style the band are currently operating in. there are even Jazz solos for fuck sake!

So, is this a bad album? No it really isn’t. Its well performed and has a powerful, confident sound. But, it has an identity crisis, and no song seems to know what it is. I just cannot get into this… though I have no doubt others will.
