Law of Contagion – Woeful Litanies from the Nether Realms

law of contagion – woeful litanies from the nether realms

Info

The debut full-length is the first ever recording of Law of Contagion, a Portuguese one-man project created by Ishkur, who is known for his work within Sonneillon BM and Nefret.

With Law of Contagion Ishkur wanted to unleash some dark and brutal Luciferian Black / Death Metal to glorify the early days of this kind of music. When we talk Black Metal on this album; the Second-Wave Black Metal tremolo riffs along with some slower haunting riffs are right in the Black Metal department. On “Heralding the Insane” there is a Mayhem’s “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” vibe going on at times and on “Litany”, maybe on purpose concerning the title, it has a Necromantia played by guitars feeling throughout the song. Death Metal? Well, the dark vocals are there and you will hear some doomy Death Metal riffs as well.

Add the dark atmosphere and the combination of all factors work well and results in a decent debut. (Ricardo (13-03-2021))

I’ve been enjoying a fair deal of Portuguese bands lately after unearthing some gems from said country. I think Portugal is also a rather overlooked country when it comes to metal. It’s a shame, because they have some truly excellent bands. Let’s shine a little light on one of them!

Law of Contagion is a one-man band featuring Ishkur, who is also involved in various other projects, although this is the first of them I’ve heard.

Musically, the style is an amalgamation of black and death metal, with an atmosphere cloaked in pitch-black illumination. The whole thing is seeped in melancholia without resorting to amusing poignant sensibilites.

Vocals are well layered atop an ambiance of darkness, emitting deathly growls fitting of the style, while guitars are fleshed out and fully immersed in an atmospheric backdrop.

Drums are rather straight-forward, but effective and implemented with precision as everything else, adding to the cohesive flow of the music, which varies from mid to fast tempos.

Having listened to this album multiple times, I can argue that every song is great, especially tracks like “Ov Evil,” “Blood Vindication” and “Ancient Obscenities.”.

Overall, if you enjoy bands such as Denouncement Pyre, Watain, and Merrimack, then Law of Contagion’s debut album, “Woeful Litanies from The Nether Realms,” is definitely worth your attention  (Jim (19-02-2022))
