Ashen Horde – Fallen Cathedrals

ashen horde – fallen cathedrals

Black Metal is a very saturated market with some great classic bands that set the bar high. For a band to stand out in any form of Black Metal takes a special release. This album by Ashen Horde from LA, California is a Progressive Black Metal album and is excellent. Strong Black Metal influences but has really good Prog Metal sections. Melodic and heavy and dark and all balanced well.

Steve Boiser provides excellent harsh Vocals while Trevor Portz handles all instruments and clean vocals. I’ve been really, really impressed by the whole record. To mix Black Metal with Progressive metal can be an awful process of trying to fit melodic breaks into the harshness. Ashen Horde make this move really well. Almost reminiscent of Dream Theater at times and then the harsh vocals layer over the top. Great melodies, great songs and an all round excellent album.

Hollywood delivers the goods. For fans of Enslaved, Strapping Young Lad, Opeth and Devin Townsend and Emperor. I didn’t think I’d see that mix of bands in the same list. Enjoy. (Uncle Les)
